A smart city is a metropolitan / urban area that uses electronic methods and sensors to collect data. Insights gained from that data are used to manage assets, resources and services efficiently and effectively. In return, that data is used to improve the operations of various citizen services across the city to better serve the communities. This includes data collected from citizens, devices, buildings and assets that is then processed and analyzed to monitor and manage transportation systems, energy generation and distribution, utilities management, waste and water supply networks, local government operations, healthcare, and other community services.
The smart city concept integrates information and communication technology (ICT), and various physical devices connected to the IoT network to optimize the efficiency of city operations and services and connect to local communities.
Smart city technology allows local governments, utilities, service providers to interact directly with both community and city infrastructure and to monitor and respond to activities, transactions and events in real or near real time. ICT is used to enhance quality, performance and interactivity of these services, to reduce costs and resource utilization and to increase contact between citizens and local governments, utilities, service providers.
